CARROLLTON, Texas – The death toll from extreme winter temperatures and bitter wind has risen to at least 199 people in northern India. Many of the poorest without shelter have been left defenseless against plummeting temperatures.
As freezing fog settled over them, missionaries with Gospel for Asia (GFA) distributed blankets to street-dwellers with no protection from the sweeping winds.
“The price of blankets, jackets and other winter clothing has spiked with the plunging temperatures, putting them out of reach of the poor,” said K. P. Yohannan, GFA president. “As they continue to suffer under open skies, cursing their fate and misfortune, they need not only warmth, but hope.”
Night is the most vulnerable time for those unable to escape the icy conditions. Those sleeping under trees, in public squares and on the pavement at railway stations, bus stops and temples were often barely distinguishable from the frozen dead, according to GFA staff members.
The blankets were part of Gospel for Asia’s Christmas distribution. GFA-supported missionaries worked quickly to mobilize distribution teams.
“In the warmth of our homes, we cannot forget or neglect those who are suffering in the frigid night through no fault of their own,” said Yohannan. “Through a simple blanket, we can communicate the warm touch of Jesus, who brings hope and a future.”
